I wasn’t able to go to work last night because I am sick. :( I feel better now, though I get dizzy at times. I am suffering from upper respiratory track infection which is very common now a days. My daughter had one already. I got mine in the office. I had fever when I reported to work last Tuesday night. But because I am thinking of my cases, I pulled myself out of bed and went to work. It was a wrong move. :( I felt really terrible when I got home the following day. And, even if I have medication for fever, it gotten worst! :( .

It is a good thing that I have a health card which I used for check up. Health cards are very dependable like other health insurances such as NC health insurance. I was advised to rest for 2 more days, but I cannot afford to be absent anymore because of the cases I am handling. :(

I do not have fever as a write this article but I am not completely well. I know that I should be following doctor’s advices but I need to go to work. I am praying that God will lay His healing hands on me. So, when I go to work tonight, I would be okay. :)

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is a flu-like illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. It can present as a mild simple flu like illness or as a severe Dengue Shock Syndrome which could lead to DEATH.

Who gets Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever may occur in people of all ages.

What are Signs and Symptoms of Dengue Fever and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever?

Dengue fever usually starts suddenly with high fever, rash, sever headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains. Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite are common. A rash usually appears 3 to 4 days after the start of the fever. The illness can last from 7 to 10 days, but complete recovery can take as long as a month. Older children and adults are usually sicker than younger children.

Most dengue infections result in relatively mild illness, but some can progress to sever dengue hemorrhagic fever, where the blood vessels start to leak and cause bleeding and shock. Bruising can be a sign of bleeding inside the body. Without prompt treatment, the blood vessels can collapse, causing shock (dengue shock syndrome). Dengue hemorrhagic fever is fatal in about 5 percent of cases, mostly among children and young adults.

How soon after exposure do symptoms appear?

The time between the bite of a mosquito carrying dengue virus and the start of symptoms averages 4 to 6 days, with a range of 3 to 14 days. An infected person cannot spread the infection to other persons but can be a source of dengue virus for mosquitoes for 6 days.

Who is at risk for dengue?

Anyone who is bitten by an infected mosquito can get dengue fever. Risk factors for dengue hemorrhagic fever include a person’s age and immune status, as well as the strain of the virus. Persons who were previously infected with one or more types of dengue virus are at greater risk for developing severe dengue hemorrhagic fever if infected again.

What is the treatment for dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever?

There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Persons with dengue fever should rest and drink plenty of fluids. They should be kept away from mosquitoes for the protection of others. Dengue fever us treated by replacing lost fluids, but some patients will need to be hospitalized for fluid replacement and monitoring.

How can dengue be prevented?

There is no vaccine to prevent dengue. Eliminating mosquito breeding sites is a key prevention measure. It can be done by discarding items, that can collect rain or run-off water, especially old tires. Regularly change water in outdoor bird baths and pet and animal water containers. Avoid mosquito bites by use or mosquito repellants on skin and clothing. When outdoors, during times that mosquitoes are biting, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants tucked into socks. Avoid heavily populated residential areas. When indoors, stay in air-conditioned or screened areas. Use bed nets if sleeping areas are not screened or air-conditioned. If you have symptoms of dengue, report your travel history to your doctor.

If I had previous dengue infection can I get it again?

Infection with one virus does not protect a person against infection with another type of virus but it protects a person against infection with the same virus type.

I was having lunch at our cafeteria last Friday when my eyes were caught by an advertisement printed on a cardboard which sticked on the table. We have always known the phrase, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away. But that would be the first time I have read about bananas keeping doctors away. :)

For Nonet’s Health

I am happy to know that ney is enjoying his stay and his work abroad. :) Everytime we talk over the phone, he always have exciting and new stories to share. In return, I tried to tell him good stories, too. I tell him the things I do and the things that keeps me busy so that I will not be sad while waiting for him. He told me that he was able to visit different market and malls already. He said that he would buy Nonet a new model of nebulizer and a pulse oximeter that she can use when an attack of asthma happens. He said that he will buy a portable oximeter so I could monitor the oxygen saturation in her, and I would know when to rush her to the hospital. He said that medical equipment there are very affordable.

He said that he would also find a portable airconditioning unit for Antoinette. He said that he worry about his daughter’s health and as much as possible he’s been praying that she will not get hospitalized anymore. He said that he is miles away to be with us when she gets sick and he doesn’t want me to worry about her as well.

I told ney that her daughter is being taken cared off well and that she is so much loved. I told him not to worry so much about us and that he should take good care of himself well.

Antoinette, ney and my family’s good health are part of my birthday wishes. I do not want them to get sick and I prayed that God would grant my prayers for them. :)

Watch your Health!

One of the good things I love being at Dell is the Well at Dell program they have. Recently, we had a health check up in the office. There were doctors and other health advisors who went to the office to check our blood pressure, our cholesterol level, the fat contents and sugar level. It’s a good thing that even though I love to eat chicken and quail eggs, my cholesterol level is normal. :) Well, there are a lot of cholesterol treatments out there for those who need it! :)

There were health advisors, too who gave tips on how we’ll be able to stay fit and healthy!

Just recently, I received flu vaccine to keep me from getting influenza especially during this rainy season. :)

It may sound a cliche though, but I still believe that Health is Wealth!

Sleepless Nights!

Well it is expected that I have sleepless nights because I work at night! Hehehe! Even if the company would have 24/7 support, and my previous team will have a fine schedule, I would stay in the night shift because of the additional support I would have. If only I can go back to my old team. :( Well, I’ll tell you about the transfer on another post. I really felt bitterness about it. Anyway, since my work sked is at night then I have to bear the noise and the hot weather of the morning. Sometimes, I really find it hard to get a good sleep in the morning. :(

When I bought my daughter a medicine, I found a pretty good sleeping pills that I can take if ever I experience difficulty in sleeping. I haven’t ask how much it would cost but I believe I can buy it even without prescription. Well, I hope so! I have not asked the pharmacist about it. :)

I know that I shouldn’t be dependent on pills. But if I believe that I can take one especially when I am in great need of good sleep. :)

Getting Rid of Pimples

Of course, I always have sleepless nights! It’s not because I am going something but because I work at night. Though I am getting enough sleeo in the morning, it is still different if you get the sleep at night. Well, no wonder I am getting a lot of pimples again. I have been using different oinments to treat this pimples. But I still believe that the best treatment for acne is still getting enough and good sleep. :)

Keeping your face clean as much as possible is another way, too. My friend Judy also recommend the use of calamansi juice on your face. Well, I guess I have to deal with these alternatives to prevent pimples pop out of my face. I know that as long as I am working in the night shift, I will not be able to enjoy the night sleep. :(

Green for Black?

Due to lack of sleep and failed to wash my face thoroughly, I tend to get blackheads. :( Oh I hate it! I asked my friend Judy if she can recommend a natural way of cleansing it. Well, aside from being regularly washing your face, she said that one of the best ways of pimple and blackhead treatment is rubbing off calamansi on the your face. She said to let the skin absorb the juice for 5-10 minutes then wash it off. It’s the natural way though, and it takes a lot of patience and perseverance though.

Fruits Should be Eaten on an Empty Stomach

It does makes sense though! Most of the fine dining restos I had been so far, offers fruits as appetizers instead of desserts. My sister sent an email about eating fruits as appetizers if you would want to lose weight. I know many of you have read this already. But for those who have not, here it goes.. :)

EATING FRUITS

It’s long but very informative:

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It’s not as easy as you think. It’s important to know how and when to eat.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let’s say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining – every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc – actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice – drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don’t even drink juice that has been heated up. Don’t eat cooked fruits because you don’t get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE: Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene – the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium..

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this ‘sludge’ reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup,warm water or warm beer after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE’: (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack . Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive..

Removing Triggers from Your Home

Since I learned that I have asthma, too, I have read different pamphlets on how I can prevent getting an asthma attack. Actually I have been reading different materials to help my daughter as well. I admit that one of the triggers of asthma is the allergen from pets. But, not all people who has asthma can be affected with the same allergen. That is why I am also studying the different triggers, which could cause asthma attack. I got this information from a pamphlet given from Medical City and I hope this would help a lot of asthmatic out there.

Here are some common triggers and some ways to help control them at home.  (Source: The Medical City)

Tobacco Smoke – Smoking should not be allowed in the home. Ask family members and friends to smoke outdoors. Ask your Lung Association how you can help.

Wood Smoke – Wood smoke is a problem for children and adults with asthma and allergies. Avoid wood stoves and fireplaces.

Pets – Almost all pets can cause allergies, including dogs, cats, and small animals like birds, hamsters, and guinea pigs. All pets should be removed from home if they trigger asthma and allergy symptoms. Pet allergen may stay in the home for months after the pet is gone because it remains in house dust. Allergy and asthma symptoms may take some time to get better.

If pet stays in the home, keep it out of the bedroom of anyone with asthma or allergies, weekly pet baths may help cut down the amount of pet saliva and dander in the home.

Sometimes you hear that certain cats or dogs are “non-allergenic.” There is no such thing as a “non-allergenic” furry pet. Tropical fish may be a good substitute.

Cockroaches – Cockroaches can be a big problem for some people with asthma. Tiny pieces of dead roaches and roach droppings end up in house dust and the air you breathe.

Like people, roaches need food and water a place to live. Help keep your home roach-free by storing food in sealable containers and keeping crumbs, dirty dishes and other sources of food waste cleaned up; fixing leaks and wiping up standing water; cleaning up clutter where roaches find shelter. If you still have a problem and you choose to use a pesticide, be sure to use it safely, and as directed on the label. Baits are less likely than sprays or foggers to harm your lungs.

Mold and Mildew – When moisture in the air is high, mold and mildew can be a problem in bathrooms, kitchens and basements. Make sure there areas have good air circulation and are cleaned often. The basement in particular may need a fan or a dehumidifier. Remember – the water that collects in the dehumidifier must be emptied and the container cleaned often to prevent growing mildew.

Mold may grow on foam pillow when you perspire. Wash pillow cases every week, dry thoroughly and make sure to change it every week. You may change to a fiber-filled pillow. Mold also grow in the soil of houseplants, so check them often. You may have to keep all plants outdoors.

Dust Mites – Dust mites are tiny, microscopic animals usually found in house dust. Several thousand mites can be found in a pinch of dust. Mites are one of the major triggers for people with allergies and asthma. They are one of the most difficult triggers to get rid of.

Missing Papa

While I am dusting our the frame of our family picture, I cannot help but miss my father. He’s been gone for 3 years now yet I still cry whenever I remember him. He may not be the perfect father and husband in the world, but he had loved us so much.

I remember when he was still alive; he loved playing Monopoly with us. And, he took the game seriously! He also loved singing the songs of Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. His favorite song is Delilah of Tom Jones. There was a time that I got irritated because he was singing Delilah on top of his voice, and I was just starting to get a good sleep from a night shift. Another thing that I will not forget about him was his many attempts to grow his hair. And, the I guess the most effective way he tried as hair loss treatment was using aloe vera leaves. :)

Good Morning Sunshine!

I fell asleep last night while in front of the PC! My mother then woke up and asked me to transfer to bed so I can have a comfortable sleep. Anyway, it’s a brand new morning. A fine Sunday morning! I am still sleepy though. My mother told me that I should have take advantage the “evening sleep” since it is my off from work. She said that the best way from different acne solutions is getting enough sleep.

Well, she’s actually right. I noticed that when I didn’t go to work last week, I noticed that my pimples are lessened. :)

It’s Sunday today, don’t forget to go to mass. Whatever religion you are part with, what matters is the faith that you have in one true God.
